Othello and Racism Essay Example for Free
Othello and Racism Essay Held a captive and cannot escape the grips of racism, Othello must battle with this matter from day one till his call of death. Just because his skin tone is unusual from Venice and its citizens, makes Othello an outcast . Although born a black moor, Othello has all the great characteristics a man should have. Being courageous, honorable, intelligent and all the aspects a woman would want in a husband. He grew up to be a venetian military general who has risen to high position of power is viewed in two means. One, since Othello belongs to the military realm he hence deserves the respect and authority any other general should receive. Second view is highly different and because the race role is a huge issue, it essentially eliminates the first way people would view Othello. But this doesnââ¬â¢t stop Desdemona from falling in love with him and making him her husband. The color of Othelloââ¬â¢s skin doesnââ¬â¢t bother Desdemona one bit which isnââ¬â¢t the case for the rest of the characters seen throughout the play. Before Othelloââ¬â¢s name is even mentioned in the play, racial slurs are being said and the audience is being introduced to how Othello will be treated. In Act I Scene I, Rodrigo and Iago talk about ââ¬Å"the moorâ⬠, ââ¬Å"the thick-lipsâ⬠and ââ¬Å"the old black ramâ⬠. Small comments like these slowly bring out the characteristics that multiple characters share in this play. Iago and Rodrigo arenââ¬â¢t the only ones who have a problem with Othello; Desdemonaââ¬â¢s father ,Brabantio, is in the same boat with Iago and Rodrigo. Brabantio is a self-important the Venetian Senator whose main priorities are his job and his daughter. If one of these main concerns arenââ¬â¢t necessarily going his way, then there could be a problem. Othello encounters this the hard way unfortunately. Brabantio hears news about how his daughter has gotten married but not to any regular guy, to a moor.

Grandma and Grandpa :: Personal Narrative Profile
Grandpa Pat McGill, Jr. of Wisner, Nebraska always entered a room smiling. Pat fathered eleven children, including my mother, and had over fifty grandchildren, including me. Even though my grandpa and I were not all that close, I admired and respected his kind and gentle nature. He passed away in the summer of 1996, and I didn't get to say goodbye to Grandpa Pat McGill before he headed up to heaven with all the other saints. All but one of the McGill grandchildren were at my grandpa's memorial service. I held my mom's hand as all of the children and grandchildren lined the aisle and acted as an "honor guard" for the casket. We both sobbed. At the end of the service, the priest announced that there would be an all-night vigil in the church for my grandpa, and they needed volunteers to sign up to stay with him in the church. I didn't think much of it, assuming that townspeople and family members would flock to the signup sheet. Apparently EVERYONE made this assumption. A contingent of my cousins went out to the bars to hold "an Irish wake" and lubricate themselves with alcohol. The residents of Wisner mostly went home to their beds. It turned out that no one had volunteered to stay with my grandpa from the hours of 2:00 AM to 6:00 AM, and hysteria broke out. My grandma was heartbroken. My mom was scrambling to solve the problem. Then I spoke up: "I'm used to staying up all night. I can do it." Everyone looked at me and blinked. "Really?" they said. "All night?" I took my notebook to the church and sat in the front pew. I worked on a short story called Mushroom until I was alone in the church with my grandpa's open casket. It was impossible to distract myself from this situation anymore. I approached my grandpa and looked closely at him. I started talking to him about the things I had been doing in Massachusetts. I sang songs to him. I asked him if I would ever find a way to stop loving the girl who broke my heart a year earlier. I cried for a little while. I touched his hands. I realized how much I admired the power of his smile and his capacity for joy.

Coca Cola Vending Machines Case Study
Coca Cola a Vending Machine Case Study Problem Statement: Coca Cola Co. , the worldââ¬â¢s largest beverage company is facing a public relation nightmare which can ultimately put their brand image at stake. Their Chairman and CEO, Ivan Ivester, abruptly announced the introduction of interactive vending technology which will lower the price of coke during off-peak buying time and increase the price during very hot weather conditions, Ivester virtually confirmed the vending machines will be introduced to the market soon. The core problem is not if the vending machine should be brought to market but WHEN and what the public relations/marketing strategy should be in the midst of the current media scrutiny to rebuild loyalty with avid coke drinkers and Cokeââ¬â¢s image. Critical Factors: Increasing the vending machine profit, which has been the main profit resource for the company, serves the purpose of the new technology. Sales of soft drinks are on the rise. Last year, about 11. 9 % of soft drinks world- wide derived from vending machines. Intelligent vending has already begun in Japan using the same technology.Taking full advantage of the law of supply and demand, price fluctuations occur all the time in several industries such as the airline and movie industries and are not new to the general public. It often occurs when the supply for any product is high and the demand is low; basic economics. Price discrimination also can occur demographically or geographically and is hard to eliminate from a customerââ¬â¢s mind once disclosed in a negative light ultimately setting the stage to lose customers to Cokeââ¬â¢s #1 competitor, PepsiCo. Additionally, their brand image is at stake.Ivester's statements regarding the new technology was disclosed too soon and the response from the public relations team was not sufficient to the loyal coke drinkers and the media, spurring several negative articles and backlash from their customers. Strategic Alternatives: Option A. Eliminate any option of introducing the interactive vending machines to the public in the near future and create a new public relations and marketing strategy focusing on Coke's loyalty to its customers to include re-establishing the value of drinking coke during extreme hot and cold temperatures.Option B. Proceed with a plan to implement the intelligent vending machines at a later date than plan originally plan, while working to develop a new public relations and marketing strategy to curtail the current media damage, focusing on Coke's loyalty to its customers and re-establish the value of drinking coke during any weather conditions. Evaluation of Alternatives: Option A: ?Pros: Build trust with consumers; on same level with competitors regarding technology. Cons: This strategy does not coincide with the companyââ¬â¢s marking plan to pump more sales of the flagship coke into the market, most likely utilizing the heat sensitive vending machine as one of the core tactics to in crease revenues. Option B: ?Pros: Technology availability and costs to implement the new vending machines is inexpensive due to falling prices of the temperature sensors and computer chips; ? Internet connectivity associated with the technology makes it very easy to track daily and hourly demand based on fluctuations thus making it easy to determine the price point offered in any region; ?The new public relations and marketing campaign will slowly educate the consumer of the inevitable; ? Increase profitability during the peak season due to lower costs compared to competitors. ?Cons: Run the risk of losing loyal customers due to the price gaps urging many consumers to search for lower price from the competitorââ¬â¢s vending machine; ? Largest competitor, PepsiCo announced they have did not have any plans to introduce the new technology Recommendation: Option B Corrective measures must take place to implement a strategy of price changes.Coke must improve their public image with a well executed public relations and marketing strategy. Justification: As a consumer, I am not sure why corporations continue to insult our intelligence. If a product is in the testing stage, then it is just a matter of time before the new technology, (if worthy) is introduced to the market. R in this case, serves the sole purpose of creating new technology in order to maximize efficiency and costs, thus increasing profits. And, quite frankly there is nothing wrong with a company trying to maximize profits.Vending machines have remained largely untouched by discounting and although the machines can automatically raise prices for its drinks in hot weather, in my opinion not too many consumers would notice. Coca Cola Co. can also be the first in the SDC market to introduce new innovation that will be able to effectively gauge the buying interests of their customer by the touch of a button. This technology will help to predict sale revenues and take the guesswork out of customersââ¬â ¢ wants and needs. It will also allow Coca Cola Co, to always stay ahead of the competition and remained the leader in the industry. Additionally, price discrimination exists everywhere, across all industries and the new technology will connote increased efficiency for the entire SDC market. The public relations and marketing campaign will help to educate and prepare the average consumer of the inevitable introduction of heat sensitive vending machines. The goal in mind for the campaign is to continue to establish Coke as the number one thirst quencher regardless of the weather.

Will robots take your job
In a world of technological advancements we ask a simple question. Will robots take our Jobs? In my personal opinion I believe they will and sort of already have in a small way. Judging by the readings in the book we can certainly see many ways robots have already started to take over Jobs by replacing people with self-check kiosk, Tam's and pay at the pump self-service stations. As stated in the book the employer can cut jack cost by purchasing ââ¬Å"humanoidsâ⬠to do Jobs more proficiently than humans. So with that being said you can see how it's possible that with advances in technology robots will take our Jobs. Check your daily routines and see how fast and easy it is for you to effectively use some sort of robotic to simplify your life in the public setting. Let's go to the store and all we need is gas.Simply slide your debit card at the island pumps and then you pump and go. K we need some quick cash so to avoid waiting on a bank teller we stop by an ATM grab the cash an d go. Now its break time at work and you have to be back in a hurry, you have a few options here. Again you can insert money into a vending machine or go to a restaurant and use the express kiosk. Just when you thought you were done you got to stop by the grocery store and pick up something to cook for supper. These lines are looking pretty long and backed up because the store is very busy, so you opt to use the U-Scan. Looking back at this daily routine we can see how robots have already taken the place of certain human jobs. Don't get me wrong you can always go into these business's and have that interaction with the associate if you would like but, when most people are in a hurry they can use the slide your card and go method as I call it Just as effectively.Let's take an adventure to the employers' point of view when it comes to robots or ââ¬Å"humanoidsâ⬠taking Jobs. One of the biggest reasons they will consider this option instead of hiring someone is that the humanoids will be able to save them money. Costing around $10,000 dollars to purchase a humanoid the employer can save on average $5,080 a year to employ them versus an actually human, based on paying someone to come in and do the Job at a minimum wage rate.Another reason is that you can expect the humanoids to happily do the Job and do it so proficiently. Now only will they be able to do your Job but they will do it better. Cooking, cleaning, placing orders, building houses, driving cars and even flying planes are some of the jobs at risk. We certainly have the technology now to replace workers the only reason we haven't implemented robots into these position is because they don't have senses such as sight, hearing and ways of expressing emotion to the customer.Furthermore we can conclude that in the future robots will and such be expected to take our Jobs. You can say no this can't be possible, but look at how technology is ever changing. Just as computers have changed over time from fittin g one in an entire room to now we can wear them on our wrist and drop them into our pockets. The market for robots to take over will be the future. By 2050 they will be perfected to proficiently

Observations on Eloquence in Writing and Speaking
Observations on Eloquence in Writing and Speaking Definition Eloquence is the art or practice of using fluent, forceful, and persuasive discourse. Its adjectival form isà eloquentà and its adverb form isà eloquently. Etymology The wordà eloquenceà derives from the Old French wordà eloquent, which itself came from the Latinà eloquens.à That Latin word essentially had the same meaning as the modernà eloquentà and pointed to a talent for speaking well. Its Latin etymology points to this as well:à eà (a preposition meaningà outà orà outwards) andà loquià (the verb forà to speak). Elements Eloquence is generally considered an asset when it comes to spoken and written language. The art of using eloquent language in a persuasive manner is calledà rhetoric, and the two often go hand in hand. However, eloquence differs from rhetoric in that rhetoric, by its very definition, has a purpose: convincing someone of something. Eloquence may be used in rhetoric, but it can also exist for its own sake of simply appreciating and using the possibilities of language. Eloquence can be achieved in a wide variety of ways. There are some elements or techniques that are generally important. Things like interesting word choice, varied sentence structure, repetition, and logical progression of ideas all may play a role. For more information on the elements of rhetorical style, try: Anti-RhetoricCopiaDeclamationThe English Manner of Discourse, by Thomas SpratEuphonyFormal Style and Informal StyleOratoryPhonaestheticsRhetoricSamuel Johnson on the Bugbear StyleWhat Is Style?Wisdom Speaking Eloquently Observations Writers, thinkers, and rhetoricians have had plenty of things to say about the virtues of eloquence over time. See some of their observations below: Talking and eloquence are not the same: to speak and to speak well are two things.(Ben Jonson, Timber, or Discoveries, 1630)They are eloquent who can speak low things acutely, and of great things with dignity, and of moderate things with temper.(Cicero, The Orator)In a word, to feel your subject thoroughly, and to speak without fear, are the only rules of eloquence.(Oliver Goldsmith, Of Eloquence, 1759)Today it is not the classroom nor the classics which are the repositories of models of eloquence, but the ad agencies.(Marshall McLuhan, The Mechanical Bride, 1951)Denis Donoghue on the Gift of EloquenceEloquence, as distinct from rhetoric, has no aim: it is a play of words or other expressive means. It is a gift to be enjoyed in appreciation and practice. The main attribute of eloquence is gratuitousness: its place in the world is to be without place or function, its mode is to be intrinsic. Like beauty, it claims only the privilege of being a grace note in the culture that permits it . . . .[T]he qualities of writing I care about are increasingly hard to expound: aesthetic finesse, beauty, eloquence, style, form, imagination, fiction, the architecture of a sentence, the bearing of rhyme, pleasure, how to do things with words. It has become harder to persuade students that these are real places of interest and value in a poem, a play, a novel, or an essay in the New Yorker. . . .It is regrettable that undergraduate education is already turned toward the professional and managerial skills on which students will depend for a livelihood. Those skills do not include eloquence or an appreciation of eloquence: each profession has its own ways of speech, corresponding to its pragmatic purposes and values.(Denis Donoghue, On Eloquence. Yale University Press, 2008) Kenneth Burke on Eloquence and LiteratureEloquence itself . . . is no mere plaster added to a framework of more stable qualities. Eloquence is simply the end of art, and is thus its essence. Even the poorest art is eloquent, but in a poor way, with less intensity, until this aspect is obscured by others fattening upon its leanness. Eloquence is not showiness . . ..The primary purpose of eloquence is not to enable us to live our lives on paperit is to convert life into its most thorough verbal equivalent. The categorical appeal of literature resides in a liking for verbalization as such, just as the categorical appeal of music resides in a liking for musical sounds as such.(Kenneth Burke, Counter-Statement. Harcourt, 1931)Sterne on Two Kinds of EloquenceThere are two sorts of eloquence. The one indeed scarce deserves the name of it, which consists chiefly in laboured and polished periods, an over-curious and artificial arrangement of figures, tinselled over with a gaudy embellishment of words, which glitter, but convey little or no light to the understanding. This kind of writing is for the most part much affected and admired by people of weak judgment and vicious taste. . . . The other sort of eloquence is quite the reverse of this; and which may be said to be the true characteristic of the holy scriptures, where the excellence does not arise from a laboured and far-fetched elocution, but from a surprising mixture of simplicity and majesty, which is a double character, so difficult to be united, that it is seldom to be met with in compositions merely human.(Laurence Sterne, Sermon 42: Search the Scriptures, 1760) David Hume on Modern EloquenceIt may be pretended, that the decline of eloquence is owing to the superior good sense of the moderns, who reject with disdain all those rhetorical tricks employed to seduce the judges, and will admit of nothing but solid argument in any debate of deliberation. . . . Now, banish the pathetic from public discourses, and you reduce the speakers merely to modern eloquence; that is, to good sense delivered in proper expression.(David Hume, An Essay on Eloquence, 1742)Pope on False and True EloquenceWords are like leaves; and where they most abound,Much fruit of sense beneath is rarely found:False Eloquence, like the prismatic glass,Its gaudy colours spreads on every place; The face of Nature we no more survey,All glares alike, without distinction gay;But true expression, like th unchanging Sun,Clears and improves whateer it shines upon;It gilds all objects, but it alters none.(Alexander Pope, An Essay on Criticism, 1711)Milton on Eloquence and TruthFor me, re aders, although I cannot say that I am utterly untrained in those rules which best rhetoricians have given, or unacquainted with those examples which the prime authors of eloquence have written in any learned tongue; yet true eloquence I find to be none, but the serious and hearty love of truth: and that whose mind soever is fully possessed with a fervent desire to know good things, and with the dearest charity to infuse the knowledge of them into others, when such a man would speak, his words (by what I can express) like so many nimble and airy servitors trip about him at command, and in well-ordered files, as he would wish, fall aptly into their own places.(John Milton, An Apology for Smectymnuus, 1642) Pronunciation: EH-le-kwents
